Medical Reserve Corps Mission and Overview:

The mission of the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is to improve the health and safety of our community by organizing and utilizing public health, medical and other volunteers.

The MRC was founded after President Bush’s 2002 State of the Union Address, in which he asked all Americans to volunteer in support of their country. It is a partner program with Citizen Corps, a national network of volunteers dedicated to ensuring hometown security. Citizen Corps, along with AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) and the Peace Corps are part of the President’s USA Freedom Corps, which promotes volunteerism and service nationwide.

The FIRST RESPONSE TO ANY DISASTER IS A LOCAL RESPONSE
Major emergencies can over whelm the capabilities of our first responders, especially during the first 12 to 72 hours. Volunteers (medical and other) can provide an important “surge” capacity during that critical period. They can also augment medical staff shortages at local medical and emergency facilities. In short, we often need medically trained individuals to fill in the gaps in our emergency response plans and to improve our response capabilities overall.

Green River District Medical Reserve Corps
Has a goal to strengthen community preparedness and response to emergency situations through volunteer teams trained in specific areas of response to assist the people of Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, Union and Webster Counties.

MRC Volunteers include medical and public health professionals such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, veterinarians, and epidemiologists.
Many community members---interpreters, chaplains, office workers, legal advisors, and others can fill in key support positions.
