Breastfeeding is a great way to ensure better health for baby and mother and has good effects that last throughout life for both. Studies have shown that babies who breastfeed are less likely to develop allergies, have fewer ear infections, and have better dental health. Breastfed babies are also less likely to grow up overweight or develop diabetes later in life.
Breastfeeding also has benefits for the mother, facilitating a closer bond between mother and child while supporting weight loss after the birth of the child. Studies have also shown that women who breastfed have fewer pre-menopausal cancers and less incidence of osteoporosis later in life.
WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program
The WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program is a free program designed to provide support to pregnant and breastfeeding WIC mothers. Peer counselors (women who have been WIC participants and successfully breastfed) address the barriers to breastfeeding and offer support including:
- One-on-one counseling
- Breastfeeding education
- Role modeling and guidance
A peer counselor will contact you during your pregnancy and assist you with any questions or concerns you may have with breastfeeding. After delivery, the peer counselor will continue to provide support through your breastfeeding experience.
For more information on breastfeeding support or the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program, contact your local health center.
