The Green River District Health Department’s Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program aims to improve the public’s health by:
- Preventing youth from starting to use tobacco/nicotine products.
- Encouraging adults and youth to stop using all types of tobacco.
- Providing accurate and current information about tobacco use, quitting smoking, e-cigarettes, and new tobacco products.
- Protecting our families, friends and community from the dangers of secondhand smoke and e-cigarette aerosol.
- Providing education for community members, leaders, policy makers, and working together continuously to protect the community from the hazards of tobacco use.
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States and around the world. Every year more than 8,000 Kentuckians die of illnesses caused by smoking.
Tobacco use has been associated with many negative health effects, causing harm to nearly every organ in the body. Using tobacco can increase the risk of stroke, heart disease, and cancer. Smoking can also negatively affect pregnancy and fertility, eyesight, dental health, bone health, and immune function.
There are a wide range of commercial tobacco and nicotine products. Click the links below to learn about these products, their health effects and the effects of secondhand smoke exposure.
