Fourth of July Safety Tips
As families and communities prepare to celebrate the 250th Independence Day, the Green River District Health Department encourages residents to prioritize safety, injury prevention, and community awareness during Fourth of July celebrations.
Fireworks, cookouts, and gatherings are a long-standing part of Independence Day traditions. By planning ahead and following a few important safety tips, residents can help ensure the holiday remains fun and safe for everyone.
Firework Safety: Remember the “Big Three”
1. Keep Fireworks Use Sober and Supervised
The person handling and lighting fireworks should remain 100% unimpaired. Alcohol and other substances can affect judgment, coordination, and reaction time, increasing the risk of injury. Always designate a responsible adult to supervise fireworks activities.
2. Read the Label and Follow Instructions
Fireworks are not one-size-fits-all. Safety instructions, including recommended distances for spectators, can vary depending on the product. Always read the label before use and follow the manufacturer’s directions.
3. Sparklers Are Not Toys
Sparklers are often considered a safer option for children, but they can burn at temperatures around 2,000°F and cause serious burns. Consider safer alternatives such as glow sticks, LED light-up toys, or other non-flammable activities for children.
Be Prepared Before Lighting Fireworks
Before using fireworks, make sure you have safety supplies nearby:
- A bucket of water or a charged garden hose within arm’s reach
- A clear area away from flammable materials
- Properly functioning fireworks that are not damaged or altered
If a burn occurs, immediately cool the area with clean, running water. Do not apply ice, butter, or other home remedies, as these can damage the skin further. Seek medical attention for serious burns, burns involving the face or hands, large areas of the body, or any burn that appears severe.
Be Mindful of Your Community
Fourth of July celebrations can impact more than just those participating. Loud and unexpected fireworks may be stressful for neighbors, pets, young children, and individuals who are sensitive to sudden noises, including some veterans with post-traumatic stress.
Help create a safer celebration by:
- Being aware of noise levels and timing
- Keeping pets indoors and secure
- Informing neighbors before setting off fireworks
- Respecting community spaces and shared environments
The Safest Way to Enjoy Fireworks
The safest way to enjoy fireworks is through a professional public display. These events are conducted by trained professionals who follow safety protocols and provide an opportunity for families to enjoy fireworks while reducing the risks associated with personal use.
This Fourth of July, celebrate safely by making responsible choices, preparing ahead, and considering how your celebration affects those around you.
