Tick Safety for Outdoor Activities

The Green River District Health Department is encouraging residents to take simple precautions to reduce the risk of tick bites and tick-borne illness while spending time outdoors.

Periods of heavy rainfall and increased moisture can contribute to thicker vegetation and conditions more favorable for ticks. When outdoor areas become overgrown and humid, the likelihood of encountering ticks increases. Changes in the environment, including flooding, may also shift wildlife movement and increase contact between people and tick habitats.

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Avoid high grass and wooded areas when possible
  • Use EPA-approved insect repellent
  • Check your body, clothing, and pets for ticks after outdoor activities
  • Shower soon after being outdoors
  • Stay informed about local public health guidance
