Winter Safety Tips

Start the New Year Prepared

As the new year begins, the Green River District Health Department reminds residents that winter weather is still ahead and now is the time to prepare. Snow, ice, and extreme cold can arrive quickly, but simple steps can help keep individuals and families safe and healthy throughout the season.

Being prepared at the start of the year can reduce stress and prevent emergencies when winter weather strikes. Residents are encouraged to review their plans, check supplies, and take steps now to protect their health.

Key winter weather preparedness tips include:

  • Keep an emergency kit with water, food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and a first aid kit.
  • Dress in layers and limit time outdoors during extreme cold.
  • Use space heaters safely and keep them at least three feet away from anything that can burn.
  • Install and check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Check on older adults, neighbors, and others who may need extra support during cold weather.

Cold temperatures can increase the risk of hypothermia, frostbite, and carbon monoxide poisoning, especially during power outages or when alternative heating sources are used. Residents should never use grills, generators, or gas appliances indoors.

The Green River District Health Department encourages everyone to make winter preparedness part of their New Year routine. Taking a few minutes now can help ensure a safer, healthier start to 2026.
