The Green River District Health Department’s Onsite Sewage Disposal Program helps protect public health and prevent groundwater contamination from leaking or failing septic systems.
If a home or commercial property is not served by a municipal sewer system, a site evaluation is required before construction or septic system installation. A health department environmentalist reviews the property to determine whether the soil and site conditions are suitable for safe onsite wastewater disposal.
The department also investigates complaints about illegal sewage discharge and failing septic systems. During a site evaluation, the environmentalist analyzes soil texture and structure, identifies restrictive soil layers, and reviews site features that could affect wastewater disposal or contribute to groundwater contamination. After a site is approved, the health department can issue a permit to a certified contractor for septic system construction and inspection.
Site Evaluations
If you are building a house in an area without municipal sewer service, or if an existing residence needs a new septic system, the first step is to apply for a site evaluation. You or your representative must apply in person at your county health center. Please bring the following information when you apply:
- A location map showing how to reach the site.
- A site drawing showing property lines and lot dimensions; the location of existing structures; wells, ponds, streams, gullies, swamps, or similar features; and any easements, roads, driveways, or rights-of-way. Plats or survey maps may be required in some counties.
- Floor plans or blueprints for the structure served by the septic system, if required by your county, for review by a health department environmentalist when the application is submitted.
- The $200 site evaluation fee. Checks may be made payable to “GRDHD”.
